What is Asbestos?
Asbestos is the fibrous form of several minerals
and hydrous silicates of magnesium. Asbestos fibers are nonflammable
and do not make for a good heat conductor. Because of its attributes,
asbestos has been used to make a wide variety of products, including
insulation products for commercial and industrial buildings.
Effects of being exposed to Asbestos:
Exposure to asbestos fibers and dust can cause
a disease of the lungs due to the inhalation of asbestos particles.
This disease is called asbestosis. If there is continued exposure
to asbestos fibers and dust, cancer and mesothelioma are the typical
result. Because of the disastrous results due to the exposure of
asbestos, numerous laws have been provided in the United States
that limit the use of asbestos. Most of the laws were passed beginning
in 1960, including the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970.
